Independence Dam Canal Reconnection & Wetland Creation

Defiance County | Maumee River Watershed | Inland

The goal of this project is to improve water quality along the Maumee River by restoring the functionality of the water control gate structure of the historic Miami & Erie canal, enabling flow from the river to enter and flow through existing, abandoned canal. Reestablishing flow through the 6.5 miles of canal downstream of the Independence Dam will result in nutrient and sediment reduction in a similar manner to that of a natural riparian corridor.
